The 4 Hidden Faces of Iron in Your Well Water — And How to Spot Them
Private water wells in Rural Ontario are commonplace for residents wanting access to reliable clean water. However, water drawn from a private well is never 100% clean, and the contents of your water can change through the seasons. Over the course of 50 years in business, we’ve found that iron content in your water is an issue affecting at least 1 in every 3 homes that we service.

While not dangerous to your health, iron has a direct effect on your home maintenance costs by reducing the lifespan of household appliances, clogging your water lines, and staining your clothes, dishes, and anything coming into contact with this water. Iron sediment imparts a metallic taste in water and will affect the flavour of drinks or food preparation — something a Reverse Osmosis drinking water system won’t fully remove.
We recommend getting a professional water test done when there is a high water table due to rain or snow, as that will identify what your water table allows to flow into your well. But before you call for testing, a 5-minute water test at home can give you an idea about the iron levels in your water as well as help identify which of the 4 types of iron may be present in your drinking water.

Why Is Iron So Common in Southern Ontario Wells?
Southern Ontario’s geology plays a major role. Our region sits on glacial till, limestone bedrock, and iron-rich soils left behind by retreating glaciers thousands of years ago. As groundwater moves through these formations, it picks up dissolved minerals — including iron.
According to Health Canada’s Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality, the aesthetic objective for total iron is ≤ 0.1 mg/L (100 µg/L). While most Canadian water sources fall below 1 mg/L, many private wells in Southern Ontario exceed this significantly, especially during spring thaws or periods of heavy rainfall when water tables rise.
And because iron affects water quality year-round — and becomes more noticeable during peak seasonal changes — understanding what you’re dealing with is the first step toward solving it.
The 4 Types of Iron You Might Have in Your Water
Not all iron behaves the same. Each type reveals itself differently, and more importantly, requires a different treatment approach. Installing the wrong system can leave you with the same problems — and wasted money. Here’s how to tell them apart.
1. Ferrous Iron (Clear-Water Iron)
What you’ll notice: Water appears perfectly clear when it comes out of the tap. No discoloration. No sediment. Looks fine.
What happens next: Leave a glass of water on the counter for 30 minutes. Watch it turn cloudy. A reddish-brown film forms on the surface. Sediment settles at the bottom.
Why: Ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) is dissolved completely in its reduced state. It’s invisible — until it meets oxygen. Then it oxidizes rapidly, turning into the rust you recognize.
Common signs in your home:
- Clear water straight from the tap, but rust stains appear in toilet bowls after sitting overnight
- Orange/brown discoloration on white laundry after washing
- Metallic taste in coffee, tea, and cooking
- Reddish film on sink fixtures and showerheads
The 5-Minute Home Test: Fill a clear glass with tap water and let it sit uncovered for 15–30 minutes. If the water starts turning cloudy or develops a reddish tint, you likely have ferrous iron.
2. Ferric Iron (Red-Water Iron)
What you’ll notice: The water is discolored straight from the tap. No waiting period needed.
Why: Ferric iron (Fe³⁺) has already oxidized. It’s insoluble and exists as suspended particles in your water supply. Unlike ferrous iron, it doesn’t need to react with air — it’s already “rusty.”
Common signs in your home:
- Visibly cloudy or brownish water from the moment it flows
- Visible sediment settling at the bottom of toilet tanks and bathtubs
- Reduced water pressure from pipe buildup over time
- Rust stains on porcelain and fixtures that wash off slowly
The 5-Minute Home Test: Fill a clear glass and inspect immediately. If you see floating particles or the water is brown/red straight away, you’re dealing with ferric iron. For added clarity, pour the water through a white paper towel. If reddish stains remain on the paper, ferric iron is confirmed.
3. Organic Iron (Chelated / Complexed Iron)
What you’ll notice: Water may look yellowish, amber, or even tea-coloured — distinctly different from the orange/rust colour of ferric iron.
Why: This iron is bound to dissolved organic compounds — typically tannins and humic acids from decaying vegetation in wetlands and peat deposits. Southern Ontario has plenty of both, especially in areas near former marshlands or agricultural runoff zones.
The organic molecules “protect” the iron from oxidizing normally, which is why standard iron filters often fail to address this type.
Common signs in your home:
- Yellow or tea-coloured water (not rust-orange)
- Stains that look more brown-yellow than red-brown
- Standard iron filters seem ineffective — the colour keeps returning
- May coexist with tannins (which require separate treatment)
The 5-Minute Home Test: Observe the water colour carefully. If it’s yellow/amber rather than orange/red, organic iron may be present. Pour water into a clear container against a white background. Tea-coloured water = high likelihood of organic iron + tannins. Note: Professional lab testing is needed to confirm.
4. Iron Bacteria (Bacterial Iron)
What you’ll notice: Slimy, rust-coloured buildup that keeps coming back — even after cleaning.
Why: These aren’t just iron deposits — they’re living organisms. Iron bacteria are naturally occurring microorganisms that metabolize iron for energy. They oxidize ferrous iron to ferric iron and produce a slimy biofilm in the process. They thrive in Southern Ontario’s shallow groundwater and can re-colonize quickly after treatment.
This one is frequently misdiagnosed. Many homeowners think they just have “bad iron” when the real culprit is a living colony that needs disinfection, not just filtration.
Common signs in your home:
- Slimy, rust-coloured buildup in toilet tanks that can be wiped off with a finger but returns within days
- Orange/brown slime coating pipes, well casings, and the interior of plumbing fixtures
- Water may smell unusual — described as swampy, musty, or even cucumber-like
- Fluctuating iron levels — the problem seems to come and go
- Clogged fixtures and reduced water pressure despite having a filtration system
The 5-Minute Home Test: Open your toilet tank and inspect the inside walls and components. Wipe the slime with your finger. Does it feel slippery or gelatinous? Does it return within a few days after cleaning? If yes, iron bacteria are likely present. This requires professional attention — standard iron filters won’t solve a bacterial problem.
